How to Watch Our MPEG-4 MoviesAll digital movies are encoded in a specific format and there are many different formats available. To see the moving images, you need player software that understands the video encoding. To hear sound while the Photo and Video playing, the player must also understand the audio encoding. The video and audio are stored in a data file (called a container), so your player has to understand the container format too. Finally, your player must retrieve the data file from a server using a protocol it understands. We have chosen to make our movies available via a Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) server using an MPEG-4 container with H.264 video encoding and AAC audio encoding. These are international standards for very high quality movies supported by a wide choice of players over a broad range of internet connections. For Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, we recommend the free QuickTime 7 player. Simply by clicking on the images, our default embedded links on this webpage will launch the QuickTime plugin available for most web browsers. Your browser will automatically download and install the QT 7 plugin if it's not already present. If you do not wish to use QuickTime 7 and for other operating systems, such as Linux, you will need to manually download, install and operate a player. We recommend the free VLC player because it natively understands MPEG-4 encoding and is available for a wide variety of platforms. To view the movies via VLC: start the VLC media player application, go to File → Open Network Stream → “RTSP…” and enter the desired address. The RTSP address for each movie is at the bottom of the descriptive text. |
